Indonesia's financial market is 'terror-proof'. If judged by the market's reaction, the terrorists who attacked a police traffic post and a Starbucks coffee shop in Central Jakarta last Thursday have died in vain. Despite the attack, the market stood firm. The terror attempt failed miserably.
Even as bombs exploded and gunfire ensued, the Bank of Indonesia (BI) board of governors cut the BI rate by 25 basis points to 7.25 percent. Logically, lowering the interest rate benchmark in the aftermath of a terror attack would be terrible policymaking that can bring down the rupiah.
