The 2018 regional head elections are a warm-up to next year’s presidential election. Fierce competition is taking place in strategic areas home to large pockets of voters. Volunteers supporting Jokowi are remobilized to bring in votes. However, in some areas Jokowi’s position is not yet guaranteed.

The visit of two guests to the Bogor Presidential Palace about three weeks ago caused no media commotion. Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Deputy Secretary-General Ahmad Basarah and candidate for deputy governor of East Java Puti Guntur Sukarno were there to meet President Joko Widodo, who was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.
