Weak But Still Rising

Tuesday, August 8 2017 00:00 WIB

Half year financials of several large listed companies have begun to emerge in the media. The numbers show continued weak performance, a sign that the economy has yet to fully recover. Retail companies, like Matahari Department Store and Hero Supermarket, have each shown revenue growth, but still much below a year ago. Consumer companies, like Unilever Indonesia and Indofood CBP, have also posted similar weaker results than last year.

Conversely, Jakarta's stock market index (JCI) is not reflecting this soft sales trend and continues its steady upward climb. The JCI, which was at 5,276 in early January this year, has steadily risen 10.7 percent to 5,840 by July-end. Apparently, the market players remain optimistic that companies will show improved performance for the remaining half of the year.
