Tuesday, August 8 2017 00:00 WIB

Indonesia continued to push for accession of Southeast Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone (SEANWFZ) at the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) meeting, held on August 2-8 in Manila, Philippines. "For Indonesia, accession of SEANWFZ by nuclear owner countries is a must," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at the SEANWFZ committee meeting.

She asserted that 22 years after the signing of the treaty by the 10-member states, none of the countries with nuclear weapons have acceded to the protocol mentioned in the agreement. Retno said that accession was important to ensure the effectiveness of the SEANWFZ and protect more than 600 million ASEAN citizens from nuclear threat.
