STATUES and sculptures in public places have been met with fierce rejection in several spots of the country over the past few years. Groups have dismantled and burned down statues or requested for these ‘offending’ items to be covered up or relocated, citing idolatry and incompatibility with local culture.

On the seabed off Gili Meno, North Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, one will find a sculpture of 15 pairs of men and women in a circle formation with over a dozen figures lying down at the center. The underwater park, called NEST, is a new dive spot for tourists and was created by the acclaimed British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.

The park is part of the Bask Resort’s development project aimed at preserving coral reefs in the waters of Gili Men
