After officially being part of Indonesia for half a century now, the Province of Papua continues to face health problems. Medical facilities and programs of the central and regional governments have been unable to stem the high level of illnesses and deaths in this area affectionately known as Bumi Cenderawasih (the land of the bird of paradise). Since August 2017, Tempo visited three large hospitals in Papua, namely the Jayapura, Abepura, and Wamena Regional General Hospitals (RSUDs), as well as some public health clinics. We also interviewed doctors and the families of patients. It seems that the quality of health services there are cause for concern.
