Like power, noble values are usually associated with heroes – which is one reason people build monuments. These values—nobility of spirit, courage and so on—have no fixed place. The fixed is not in anyone’s heart.

“REMEMBER, remember us…,” say those who fell fighting for independence, as Chairil Anwar depicts in his poem Antara Krawang-Bekasi. And when Karawang and Bekasi lost their heroic aura of the past, people erected monuments.
It is not clear when people started building monuments. The word comes from the Latin monumentum meaning reminder or record. Usually it is a statue of someone, especially heroes.
