WHEN the ringgit in his wallet ran low, Steven Widyatmadja decided to try out the effectiveness of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) to make a transaction in Penang, Malaysia, in early January. The 32-year-old tried QRIS when he wanted to buy snacks at a convenience store. The cashier happened to offer a QR payment option. “It was surprisingly easy,” said Steven, who lives in West Jakarta, on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
