The plan to build a high-speed rail line from Jakarta to Surabaya is back on the table. It risks repeating the fate of Whoosh, mired in debt.

THE high-speed rail track may not end in Bandung, West Java. Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC), operator of the Jakarta-Bandung bullet train, Whoosh, is now studying a possible extension of the line eastward across Java. “We continue to coordinate and discuss the proposed extension of Whoosh’s route,” KCIC Corporate Communications Manager Emir Monti told Tempo on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
