Bali’s Subak Tradition Under Threat

Thousands of hectares of rice fields in Bali are being converted into tourist zones. The centuries-old tradition of subak is on the brink of extinction.

THE lush green rice paddies that once stretched endlessly are increasingly hard to find for I Gusti Ngurah Adi. The 61-year-old community elder of Subak Munggu Tegallantang now sees more and more idle plots in his birthplace, Pererenan village, Badung Regency, Bali. Hundreds of hectares of farmland have been turned into tourism zones dotted with resorts. Billboards planted on the sites notify that the land is being sold off.
