Pahlawan, the Indonesian word for “hero,” originally meant “wrestler.” With this expanded meaning, people competed to become heroes.

WE call them pahlawan, heroes, sometimes loudly, sometimes quietly, depending on how much we believe in the word. Perhaps because we are not entirely sure of the meaning of the word we borrowed from far away, from the Persian pahlavan or the Hindi pehlwan, both of which mean wrestler.
