AHEAD of her flight from London to Cape Town in December 2013, Justine Sacco tweeted: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”
The employee of a New York-based Internet firm intended the tweet to be satirical, pointing out Western racism and Westerners’ ignorance about HIV/AIDS in Africa. Sacco was laughing at the irony of white privilege, not at people with HIV or Africans.
