FOR now, the global trade war is on pause. The United States and China have agreed to a 90-day truce. As part of the détente, Washington is lowering additional tariffs on Chinese imports from a punishing 145 percent to 30 percent. In return, Beijing is reducing duties on American goods from 125 percent to 10 percent.

Financial markets have responded with enthusiasm. The dollar gained ground, equities surged on Wall Street and Jakarta
