INDONESIA has been dealt an embarrassing slap. Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI)—a leading investment research firm and the builder of hundreds of thousands of indices used as global market benchmarks—has issued an ultimatum. Unless regulation and governance are tightened, MSCI will downgrade the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in May 2026 from emerging market status to the frontier market category.
