TEAR gas filled the air outside the regent’s office in Bone, South Sulawesi, on the night of Tuesday, August 19, 2025. Thick smoke spread in every direction, stinging the eyes and choking the lungs of thousands of protesters who had gathered to oppose sharp hikes in rural and urban land and building taxes (PBB-P2). Moments earlier, demonstrators had torn down the office gates.
