Stop Politicizing the Hermansyah Case

Speculations about the motive behind the attack on Hermansyah should stop. There is a rumor that he was stabbed because of his statement on the alleged pornographic act committed by Islamic Defenders Front leader Rizieq Syihab, which was not in agreement with police findings. Another subsequent allegation posted on social media was that the incident was triggered by a feud about a woman. Linking cases in this arbitrary fashion will only lead to unnecessary problems.

Don't Stop with Emirsyah

The revelation that Rolls-Royce had bribed Garuda Indonesia's top executive did not come as a surprise. The rumors of suspicious frauds at Garuda first surfaced in 2006, a year after CEO Emirsyah Satarcurrently indicted for the Rolls-Royce bribery casetook over the reins.

At that time, Anwar Nasution, Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chairman, warned of suspected violations in the airline's ticket sales section, which could potentially incur tens of billions of rupiah in losses to the company. However, no one acted on his warnings.

Prasada Rao UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Asia Pacific
Stop closing down brothels

According to Prasada Rao, ignorance has been the biggest barrier in dealing with the decades-old HIV/AIDS epidemic. This is why he speaks openly about the disease, freely discussing such topics as sex and sex education, which most Asians see as taboo, so that the social stigma attached to its victims can be erased, a first step in the prevention and treatment of the disease.

Rao truly believes that an open discussion of the subject would be the best protection against the disease, yet the biggest challenge in addressing this global epidemic. "For Asians, sex is taboo. It's in your bedroom, not on the road. So there's always that challenge," he told Tempo.

When Engine No. 4 Stopped

THE crash of a Hercules C-130 in Medan was the result of the fourth engine under the right wing malfunctioning. The supposition is backed by the fact that the engine's propeller also stopped functioning. As a result, the transport plane had difficulty climbing, which led to the fatal crash. This disastrous event is yet another incident involving the ageing US-manufactured planes.

Ali Murtopo
A Man with a Secret

Ali Murtopo was a controversial figure: praised by friends and family, condemned by political opponents. As an intelligence officer, an activist and a skilled politician, he became important to Suharto and his New Order politics.

He paved the way for Suharto to take over power. He crushed democracy just as Indonesia was moving away from Sukarno's authoritarianism. He led special operations: eliminating political parties to make way for Golkar's rise, and creating Islamophobia by working with radical Islamists. Ali played dirty: plotting intrigues and playing off one side against another.

After a life shrouded in mystery, Ali, who hailed from Java's north coast, died alone, cast aside by his associates. He finally succumbed to a fourth heart attack.

The Sounds of Ketoprak Castanets

LONG a dying art, the ketoprak tobong theater slowly disappeared and changed to become ketoprak tanggapan. The first form represented not only art but also a communitythe performers and crew who live for months in non-permanent spaces which are dismantled, carried and assembled wherever they perform.

Ketoprak tanggapan is a more simplified form: the performers only congregate to perform upon request. On the northern coast of Java, groups have been growing and depending on performing for this type of theater for their livelihoods. The tobong era is finished, particularly since the Siswoyo Budoyo Tulungagung group ceased to operate in 2001. Other tobong groups barely survived: spectators are unwilling to go and watch tobong performances as they prefer to sit and watch soap operas and dangdut music on television.

At the end of last February, a ketoprak (traditional Javanese dance-drama) festival was held in Solo, Central Java. The sound of keprak, a small wooden box that is tapped and produces castanet-like beats to mark the change of scenes, evidently has never totally disappeared.

US$12 Million for Animal Conservation

The United States will forgive more than US$12 million in Indonesian debt so the state can better protect critically endangered species on the island of Sumatra.

The 'debt-for-nature' swap, enabled by the United States' Tropical Forests Conservation Act, will bolster protected areas, which often lack sufficient funding to be effective, said Ketut Putra, vice president of Conservation International Indonesia, a nonprofit group that brokered the deal.

2012 Talking Points

Our year-end special issue diverges from the usual. Instead of our regular roundup of reports, we asked academics and analysts to review events in Indonesia during the past 12 months and for a reading of what's to come. Their commentaries in this special issue cover a wide range of issues, from politics to extremism and governance, and from the economy to national branding and special education. We also collaborated with a number of institutions to come up with vital statistics that could assist us in interpreting trends and events. And to enrich our coverage, we feature a special collage of photographs to recall the year that was.
