Endo Suanda’s Bamboo Instruments

Musicologist Endo Suanda has created a variety of musical instruments out of bamboo. These include guitars, kecapi (Indonesian zither), kettle drums, and even large drums for mosques.

AT first sight, the two unpainted guitars seemed like ordinary instruments. When plucked, they also sounded just like any other guitar. The paler one had steel strings, while the browner one had nylon strings. Their uniqueness only became evident upon closer scrutiny. Both guitars, also the kecapi placed on the living room table, were not made out of wood, but rather from bamboo strips, with rather uneven surfaces.
