April 4, 1968 Civil rights leader Martin Luther King is assassinated while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray confesses and pleads guilty in March 1969, but later tries to recant and says he is a fall guy.    

April 5, 1955 Winston Churchill resigns as British prime minister. He is replaced by Anthony Eden who serves to 1957. Churchill dies on January 26, 1965 at the age
