Waiting for an Appreciative Audience

The artist Danarto has come up with a creative concept—a theater without an audience. But if the idea is literally taken as an outright rejection of audiences, then Indonesian theater is committing hara-kiri. It is an appreciation of the presence of an audience as an integral part of theater that struck me after 14 visits to theaters in Japan at the invitation of The Japan Foundation in November.
