ONE Sunday towards the end of 2006. The pianist Ananda Sukarlan, 41, was in Medan and rather puzzled. With choreographer Chendra E. Panatan, Ananda, who had been searching for Amir’s house in the Karya Wijaya area of Medan, was now standing in front of his house at a loss. After several hours of searching they had finally arrived at the right address.

They had knocked several times at the door but the house appeared to be deserted. “Well, ma
