Portraits of Islam
A joint exhibition by Indonesian and British photographers was recently held on the theme of Islam. British photographers presented a portrait of Islam on the fringes of life in London, while their Indonesian counterparts displayed portraits of religion in their everyday life. The exhibition is an effort to promote Islam as a pluralistic, not monolithic, religion.

WHEN Admiral Cheng Ho of China sailed along the north coast of Java around 1405, one of his crew became gravely ill. He ordered anchor to be dropped and docked at a place known today as Simongan, Semarang. Not far from there, in an area today called Kedung Batu, he built a kelenteng (Chinese temple)perhaps the largest in Java. To this day, ethnic Chinese-Indonesians still go there to pay homage and commemorate Cheng Hos visit.
