Throughout the three decades of his career, artist F.X. Harsono has never let up wrestling with thorny social issues that afflict Indonesian society. In an exhibition at the Jogja National Museum last year he directed this critical approach to an interesting topic: violence and identity.

The Indonesian fine arts world was once familiar with a work titled Paling Top 75 (The Top 75)- a plastic combat weapon mounted inside a wooden crate and covered by a wire mesh, with the title printed inside in military-style stenciled lettering.
