Popok’s Black Comics

Titling his exhibition Selamat Tinggal Orang Baik-Baik (Good Bye, Good People), fine artist Popok Tri Wahyudi is exhibiting his canvas comics at Lontar Gallery. There isn’t any humor present; it’s all an atmosphere of destructive desires.

His figures seem to represent an extreme interpretation of homo homini lupus (man is dangerous to other people). On the canvas, people are seen hurting one another in a very strange way. Thighs are sawn; people are forced to drink kerosene from a jerry can. All activities tend to be masochistic. The figures use home appliances such as fans, sewing machines and scissors to hurt each other, and they use them to ruin themselves.
