Murder in Myanmar

The fatal shooting of lawyer and pro-democracy activist U Ko Ni sent shockwaves in Myanmar and beyond. Sources say he was killed for his campaign for political rights.

As he was greeting his daughter and grandson at the Yangon airport after a week-long trip to Indonesia on Sunday last week, 63-year old Ko Ni, a Muslim and key advisor to the ruling National League of Democracy (NLD) Party, was shot dead at close range by a lone gunman.

The police later arrested Kyi Lin, a former convict released by the government in a 2014 general amnesty, claiming he had been paid by a man called Myint Swe to kill Ko Ni over
