January 8, 1968Martin Luther King, Afro-American freedom fighter, is shot to death by an unknown man. King, who fought for equal rights, was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Price.

January 9, 1964Anti-US rioting breaks out in the Panama Canal Zone, resulting in the deaths of 21 Panamanians and three US soldiers. The riots began when US students attempted to raise the American flag at the Canal Zone high school.
