Living in Luxury on Landfills

Reclamation in Jakarta Bay is feared will worsen floods in coastal areas. Developers believe the island and canal model can minimize the potential for floods.

DOZENS of people were seemingly walking on water. Without wearing life jackets, holding on to bamboo stems and submerging to the waist, they were easily arranging the hundreds of stems into large raft-like structures. In fact, the depth of the sea on the shore of East Ancol, North Jakarta, is more than 5 meters.

While they were fastening bamboo, dozens of their peers were unloading sand sacks from barges and then slowly drowning the “rafts.”
