FOR many Indonesian Muslims, the world changed on January 2, 1970. On that date Nurcholish Madjid, then national chair of HMI, Islamic University Students Association, electrified an audience of young, Western-educated modernist Muslims with a speech calling for liberalization, secularization, intellectual freedom, the idea of progress and open attitudes
