I write this letter on 11 October 2001. It has been exactly a month since I and hundreds of millions of others around the world, including many of you in Indonesia, watched in horror the televised murder of thousands of people in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. The probable total number of those murdered on that day stands at 5,627.

The dead came from over 60 different countries, of which more
