As the year 2001 closed, the word went around that the TNI was weighing up the idea of re-establishing a regional military command (Kodam)for the newly renamed province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, troubled Aceh. Defense Minister Matori Abdul Djalil gave the plan his assent. According to TNI's information chief, Rear Marshal Graito Usodo, the idea was prompted by pressure from the people of Aceh themselves.
