Is the great Indonesian public ready to directly elect their president? The arguments abound. President Abdurrahman Wahid was elected through the current indirect system, defeating the clear popular favorite, Megawati Soekarnoputri, now Vice President. A direct election would be more democratic, or so the argument goes. Would it? Not everyone agrees.
