The Indonesian economy was a mess from 1965 to 1967 when Suharto took over the reins from founding president Soekarno. Would-be investors were hesitant to put their money into this country. One of them, Leslie Caron, a Unilever executive, said, "If you invest in Indonesia today, it might be too early. But if you invest tomorrow, it might be too late."
