Commissioner General Suroyo Bimantoro is very lucky. On the day he was sworn in by President Abdurrahman Wahid as Indonesian police chief, he got a nice present. His police force arrested four suspects in the case of the Jakarta Stock Exchange bombing, the issue that brought down his predecessor.

By luck or by design, this arrest gave his debut as new police chief a bit of gloss. Bimantoro replaces General Rusdihardjo, who was sacked for failing
