IT is 10 years since Samuel Huntingtons so-called clash of civilizations became part of the popular lexicon, both in the West and in many Islamic countries.

The idea that the Islamic and Western worlds were headed inevitably for a clash was seemingly given additional currency by the events of September 11 and subsequent terror attacks.
