IN early 1957, Deputy Attorney General for Intelligence Priyatna Abdurrasyid went to the residence of Sumitro Djojohadikusumo in South Jakarta. He brought along a warrant for the arrest of Bung Cum—as Sumitro, a key figure of the Indonesian Socialist Party (PSI), was called by his close friends.

“At that time, I was ordered to arrest Sumitro. When I asked what his crime was, my superior replied: just arrest him, period,” Priyatna told Tem
