SITU Gintung was initially just a body of water which grew because it got caught in a sunken basin. The Dutch—who at the time were digging a West Flood Canal to control flooding in Jakarta—utilized this water for irrigation purposes.

1932: Construction on the Situ Gintung dam begins. With two floodgates and a spillway, the dam was designed to last for a century, until 2032.
