SITU Gintung has been a bitter lesson where city planning is concerned. Built 76 years ago by the Dutch colonial government, the dam had gradually been eroded by expanding settlements, among them luxury housing whose foundations abutted its walls. The inevitable pressure resulted in a disaster that took place two weeks ago. The Situ Gintung dam could no longer resist 2 million cubic meters of water and it burst.
