THE clock on the wall of Inspector-General Oegroseno’s guest room indicated that it was past 1am when the cellphone of this North Sumatra Police Chief rang. The Hamparan Perak District Police headquarters in Deli Serdang had been attacked by an armed group. Three police were killed. Oegro immediately ordered his men to get a vehicle ready. He headed straight for Deli Serdang, about 40 kilometers from Medan.
