All that Glitters...

The copper and gold mine of West Nusa Tenggara has not benefitted the lives of the local people. The following is a firsthand report on the conditions in Sumbawa, site of the Newmont mining company.

THE sun was hot over Benete harbor in West Sumbawa regency, in the province of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) that Tuesday afternoon last week. In 38-degree-Celsius temperature, passengers disembarked from a speedboat which had just docked at the special pier belonging to PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara, an American mining company. The people on the boat were some of its employees, back from some time off in nearby Mataram.
