The euphoria over regional autonomy has led to something never before considered: the emergence of regional regulations based on Islamic law or Sharia.

It first appeared in 2001 and today there are more than 150 such regulations, known as perda syariah. They cover issues such as requirements on wearing Islamic clothing, payment of the zakat tax for the poor, bans on alcohol and special clothing on Fridays.
