Roots of Revolution

The Indonesian military created itself. It was not formed by a government or political party. At a strategy meeting during the revolution for independence, Sudirman, a teacher who became commander of the Purwokerto division, was elected as supreme commander of the People's Defense Army (TKR). He was supported by the commanders of the Homeland Defenders. His solid character earned him the loyalty of his men, which he capitalized on in the fierce national struggle to gain independence, even when the government's leaders, Sukarno and Hatta, were imprisoned by the Dutch.
