Sudirman used hit-and-run tactics to fight back against the Dutch in Yogyakarta. Military leaders could not allow themselves to be captured.

Near midnight, activity increased at the military base now known as Husein Sastranegara. A total of 18 C-47 Dakota transport planes belonging to the Dutch Royal Air Force, rumbled as they warmed up their engines.
