Defeated by Illness
A miracle occurred as Sudirman lay in hospital. He had been bed-ridden for a month with a lung infection when suddenly he rose up and decided to lead his troops out of Yogyakarta. He had a hunch that the Dutch would spring an attack.
Left with a single lung, Sudirman led a guerrilla war. For eight months in the jungle he was borne on a stretcher, leading and directing the patriot fighters to keep moving. He was later brought back to Yogyakarta under an assumed name for medical treatment. Unbeatable on the battlefield, the Commander was finally vanquished by his illness. At the age of 34, he departed this life to finally meet his Maker.
