AUSTRALIA was involved in East Timor, especially at the end of Suharto's New Order period. They proposed pro and contra views on the region's integration with the Indonesian Republic. Australian agents in Jakarta tried to find out about Indonesian intelligence activity in what was once the 27th province. "They even bribed a military officer who had received an intelligence report," Maj. Gen. (ret) Zacky Anwar Makarim told Tempo, last week.
