THE maniacal rage of a mob he witnessed in May 1998 remains deeply etched in the memory of 41-year-old Maman Imanulhaq. This founder and manager of the Al-Mizan Pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Ciborelang village in Jatiwangi, West Java was still powerless to prevent his neighbors from damaging a church as well as destroying the homes and shops owned by ethnic-Chinese residents. That experience became a driving force for Al-Mizan, which bel
