THE cafe has put on its best face with its bright green paint. But inside is completely empty. The only contents are its tables and chairs, coated in a film of dust. The Ayu Cafe Lhoknga in Aceh Besar regency's Gampong Mon Ikeun has apparently been closed since the beginning of the year.
In fact, this cafe was once the area's prime attraction. Its mie Aceh or Acehnese noodles were, and celebrities have eaten them. But with the passage of time, the cafe's stature has faded. In 2011, its owner, Ruslaili, died, and people stopped coming. Ruslaili's oldest son, Wahyu Satria, can only guess why. "Maybe customers didn't believe in my recipes," said the 22-year-old. He now works at the Jubir Banda Aceh cafe.
