AMONG the casualties of the great tsunami that struck Aceh 10 years ago were a series of historical manuscripts. Many of these were lost in the destruction of the Aceh Documentation and Information Center (PDIA) in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital.
The PDIA used to house 69 ancient documents. Forty-five percent were written in Malay, 45 percent in Arabic and 10 percent in Acehnese. There was also a rare compilation of works by Hamzah Fansuri, a famous Sumatran Sufi writer, and an old map of Banda Aceh drawn by Dutch colonialists.
