Zhou's Escape
THE invitation reached Zhou Enlai's desk on January 15, 1955, sent by Indonesian Prime Minister Ali Sastroamidjojo. It requested Zhou's attendance to the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung on April 18-24 that year. A month later Zhou responded to Ali's letter confirming his attendance at the event.
The conference was to be attended by 29 countries but only six countries had diplomatic relations with China at that time. The other participating countries built ties with the Kuomintang or Nationalist Party led by Chiang Kai-shek, based in Taiwan. The two Chinas refused to recognize each other's existence.
