Hurdles in E-Commerce
The flood of smartphones has rapidly increased the public's access to the Internet. A survey made by Google Indonesia together with GFK Indonesia from November 2014 to February 2015 indicated that Internet penetration in major Indonesian cities such as the greater Jakarta area, Bandung, Surabaya and Semarang has reached 61 percent.
In addition to accessing search engines such as Google and Yahoo, or frequently updating their status on social media such as Facebook and Twitter, Indonesian netizens are avidly conducting business through the Internet. Interest in online business continues to increase. Based on a survey of the Indonesian E-Commerce Association (idEA) and Taylor Nelson Sofres, the value of e-commerce transactions reached US$8 billion (Rp112 trillion) in 2013, and could reach US$24 billion in 2016. Ernst & Young calculated that the value of e-commerce transactions is US$3 billion (Rp42 trillion).
