The Speaker's Note
Pertamina CEO Dwi Soetjipto did not deny that a letter bearing the letterhead of House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Setya Novanto is shocking the public. When he received the letter dated October 17, 2015, he only made a note so that the letter would be discussed in a meeting of the government-owned company's board of executives. He did not suspect that later on, the letter would create a commotion after a copy leaked to the public. "I was surprised that the letter has spread and is now a hot topic of discussion," he said last Thursday.
A copy of the letter appeared not long after the uproar over the emergence of a recorded conversation among Setya, Freeport Indonesia CEO Maroef Sjamsoeddin and businessman Muhammad Riza Chalid. Riza is a big player in the oil business in Indonesia. In that recording, Setya seemingly asks for a share of Freeport Indonesia stock by bringing up the names of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
