The Philippine military has tried for years to subdue the Abu Sayyaf group, which is well known for its prowess at sea and admired by other terrorist groups. The expertise of this militia at sea has been recognized by other terrorist groups for over a decade.
The beheading of John Ridsdel shocked Manila. A day after the man from Calgary, Canada, was killed, the Philippine military conducted a major operation on April 26. At least 2,000 soldiers were dispatched to the jungles of Jolo Island in the southern Philippines. Their mission was to hunt down the Abu Sayyaf militia and rescue the three other hostages.
